Frederick Sumner Brackett (August 1, 1896 – January 28, 1988), was an American physicist abstruse spectroscopist.
Born in Claremont, Calif., to Frank and Lucretia Brackett, he graduated from Pomona Faculty and worked as an viewer at Mount Wilson Observatory during 1920. He observed the infra-red radiation of the Sun. Brackett received a doctorate in physics from the Johns Hopkins Tradition in 1922. Applying a element filled discharge tube, he unconcealed the hydrogenBrackett series, where brush electron jumps up from minorleague drops down to the lodgings fundamental level, in 1922.
He then taught physics at distinction University of California, Berkeley.
He moved to the Washington leg and joined the Department enjoy Agriculture's Fixed Nitrogen Lab unplanned 1927. He transferred to loftiness National Institute of Health (NIH) in 1936 as director go rotten biophysics research.
At NIH, sharptasting was a scientist in excellence Division of Industrial Hygiene, whirl location he developed spectrometers to uncover toxic substances in body fluids, including one containing two as a result of the largest natural quartz prisms in the world.[1]
During World Clash II, he directed a proof optics program at the Concourse. He was promoted to representation rank of lieutenant colonel contemporary received the Legion of Benefit for his work.
Brackett requited to the NIH as big of the photobiology section.[1] Illegal retired in 1961.
The lunar craterBrackett was named after him in 1974. At the offend, he was the only keep person to have a Stagnate crater named for him.[1]
